A Sketch on a Cigarette Pack Led to the Classic Jaguar XK Auto Car Series

Author: Terry Z. Voster

The legendary Jaguar XE series of fine motor cars was directly developed from the inspiration of Jaguar engineers on a rooftop watching their city of Birmingham England being bombed from the sky during the darkest days of World War II.

These engineers sketched the plans for what became the legendary Jaguar engine amazingly and simply on cigarette box carton. . This new engine was so good it became the standard that went on to become the stock Jaguar powerplant for the next 30 years. The best words that best describe this classic engine are - efficient, smooth and powerful. Indeed it was one a mechanical genius, Harry Weslake, who provided the key to the design - a light weight alloy cylinder head with dual cams and angled valves in a hemispherical combustion chamber. The final marvelous touch of genius were the two SU carburetors fed the 3.5 liter straight six, producing a 160 horse power

The new Jaguar was so good that it deserved a whole new car to be designed and built around it. The engineering felt that the motor was so exceptional it needed its own automobile - one worthy of such a powerplant. Otherwise it was if their work had been wasted. 1948 became the release date of this project. What emerged and created a storm from automobile enthusiasts was a low slung car body mounted at was then a fairly standard box-frame chassis. Independent front suspension was by torsion bars and the solid rear axle was by torsion springs. With all the power and effect the final finishing touches that were almost essential were 12 inch diameter drum brakes. Indeed the Jaguar XK120 was timed at a top test speed of 132 miles per hour

Of course the Jaguar XK proved to be a major hit - especially in the lucrative American export market. At a $ 4,000 sticker price 90 % of factory output was exported outside Britain - most of it to the American automobile market. It did not hurt the reputation and sales of the Jaguar .XK series that the car proved to be a killer on the Le Mans auto racing circuits. It was the Jaguars that were to become the inspiration for the classic "sports cars" that were to come - especially the venerable Chevrolet Corvette and Stingray.

The Jaguar line grew and evolved further with each racing win. In 1954 the next step occurred -The classic 1948 era Jaguar XE120 was replaced by what was to become a short lived production run model - the XK140. Disc brakes had made a great impression on the Jaguar racing team crews - including car design team as well as the actual drivers. Along with this went "unitary construction" a major upgrade and update from the former hefty chassis being applied from Jaguar cars from 1955 onwards.

Still the venerable motor based on the cigarette pack sketches lived on with the introduction of the next phase - the XKE Jaguar. Along with that 3.8 liter what then was a major innovation then - electric fans, which were added after exceptional results on the racing circuits with Jaguar as well as other racing cars. The XKE was considered at the time to be the sleekest automobile body shape seen anywhere and at anytime on the globe. Performance was considered mind numbing - 150 miles per hour top speed with 0 to 100 miles per hour in an extraordinary 16 seconds. A driver could accelerate from 0 to 130 miles per hour in less than 30 seconds.

It is no accident that the Jaguar XK series has gone on to be an automobile classic - both in terms of innovative styling, performance and handling.

Jaguar XKE Restoration

What you need to do before you can restore your Jaguar XKE? There are a lot of preparations before you can start your restoration.

You're going to have a place not only spacious enough for the car but for you to work around it. With a ground-up restoration like Jaguar XKE, it certainly filled another bay just keep old parts coming off the car and new parts waiting to go on. Thousands of people have restored old cars under a tree in the backyard, but in my opinion the minimum realistic space is an empty two car garage.

You'll also need at least a minimum amount of automotive knowledge and education. Happily, old Jaguar cars are easier to work on than today's computer-controlled machines. As you work on your restoration you'll also learn and understand a lot, which is half the purpose to do a project like this in the first place.

Any old car can be separated into subassemblies. Don't think about restoring a whole car--that's far too intimidating and nerve-racking. Instead, you can determine an attainable goal: "Today, I'll sand, prime and paint the wheels." Once the wheel subassembly is restored, determine another goal for tomorrow. If you restore enough subassemblies, pretty soon you've done and complete a whole car.

How long will it take? Restoration was a pretty complicated project, common sense that you'll spend at least 1000 hours on almost any ground-up old car restoration and probably a lot more. That's why the car you decide on to restore is so essential, because you'll be spending a lot of quality time together.

In the end of your Jaguar XKE restoration, you will gain great experience and you know what, it worth it.

Jaguar XKE : How to Increase Car's Power?

There are two ways of increasing the engine power of a car without enlarge its size – turbo charging and supercharging. Both ways use compressors to force more air into the cylinders. When the air and fuel ignite, said process will result to a more powerful explosion. This process took part in all engine include in your Jaguar XKE engine.

The diversity between turbo charging and supercharging lies on the method of giving power. The turbocharger of an automobile uses the engine's exhaust gas to rotate the fan that compresses air. Said fan is directly controlled by the engine. This is done by using the belt linked to the accessory drive. The components are alike to those of water pump. In the case of Ford Shelby GT 500, it uses a supercharger to support produce 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.

Match up to superchargers, turbochargers are more widespread these days. Cars with turbochargers include the Saab 9-3, Volvo S40, Acura RDX, Mazda speed 6 and almost all models with diesel engines. Conversely, cars with superchargers include Jaguar XKR, S-type R, Cadillac XLR-V and Cadillac STS-V, and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Jaguar XKR is the replacement for XJS. It is known as the supercharged variant of the XK series. Jaguar XKR parts consist of standard 18-inch alloy wheels, self-leveling xenon headlamps and navigation system. Earlier, Jaguar has created and produced a concept car dubbed as the XKR-R which is very similar to the S-Type R special edition. S-Type R joined the automaker's lineup in 2003. Jaguar S-Type car parts used in said version consist of the supercharged V8. The engine is capable of producing 390 horsepower (291 kW). The car is made sportier by using only one of its kind fascia with built-in fog lamps, aluminium bonnet, rear spoiler, rear sub frame and the peculiar 'R' badging. So far, S-Type R is the most expensive S-Type. It has a starting price of $58,995.

Deciding on which way to use in increase the car engine's power, the deciding factor is the engine size. As a fact, superchargers consume a little more power because they are continuously in action. Turbochargers, on the other hand, do not take power directly from the engine. It is the exhaust gas that compels them.

The main disadvantage of using a turbocharger is that it is time-consuming. It has turbo lag. Said lag is not a problem with a supercharger because it driven directly by the engine. Nevertheless, with the advancement of technology, turbo lag seems to wane from many engines. Furthermore, sophisticated superchargers can now be disconnected if they are not needed.

As a conclusion, turbocharger or supercharger are both equally powerful for increasing your Jaguar XKE engine power. It’s all up to you either to use turbocharger or supercharger.

Ten Simple Step to Substitute a Jaguar XKE Punctured Tire

Jaguar XKE tire might punctured someday so beware.

There is a good possibility each person will encounter a puncture at sometime in their driving lives. But it's surprising how many people still don't know how to change a car tire or Jaguar XKE tire and rely on the help of a person walking by.

There is one place you should not attempt to substitute a Jaguar XKE tire yourself- on the hard shoulder of a busy road. In this case call the emergency services and flee to safe distance until they arrive.

In all other situations changing a car tire is not as difficult as it may seem. I will share with you the guide to how it is done that’s require only ten steps:

a) Locate a safe place to stop your car, on flat ground. If it's dark look for any place with sufficient lighting. Park as far away from traffic as possible and switch on your hazard lights.

b) Turn off the engine of your car, pull the handbrake lever and put the car into first gear or 'P' if it's an automatic transmission.

c) Search and prepare the tools for the job. These will consist of tools like a jack, wheel wrench and the spare tire. All are usually located in the boot of a car.

d) Take off the hubcap or plastic wheel cover using the flat end of the wheel wrench or a screw driver.

e) Loosen all the wheel nuts by turning half a turn in an anti clockwise direction. Attention, do NOT remove them. That occurs at a later stage.

Tight wheel nuts can be the challenge part of replacing a Jaguar XKE tire. If the wheel nuts are proving stubborn use a metal tube to extend the wheel wrench's handle and provide extra force. Alternatively place one foot on the handle of the wheel wrench and carefully use your body weight until the nut is loosened.

Many cars have a locking wheel nut to prevent theft. These have need of a special attachment which is often found in a car's glove compartment.

f) Refer to the vehicle's handbook to find where to place the jack. This is essential because if it's put in the incorrect place the car could slip off the jack and bring about serious injury.

Search for a reinforced lip on beneath of the car near to the wheel arch.

When the jack is firmly attached lift the car until there is enough room to take out the punctured tire and switch it with the fully inflated spare.

g) Right now continue to remove all of the wheel nuts and leave them someplace safe nearby- of course not near an open drain! Remove the punctured Jaguar XKE tire and replace with the spare tire.

h) Exchange and tighten the wheel nuts. Don't try to hard to tighten them until the car is off the jack.

i) Gradually lower the car down off the jack. Right now tighten the nuts again. Keep in mind to return the jack and the wheel wrench to the boot of the car.

j) Change the hubcap or plastic wheel cover and carry on with your journey.

At the first chance stop at a petrol station and ensure the new tire is inflated to the correct pressure specification, the same as the other car tires.

If in any doubts about your Jaguar XKE tire changing skill, call into to your nearest workshop or car tire specialist.

Jaguar XKE tire must always be checked.

1962 Jaguar XK-E Factory Lightweight Race Car Pictures

1962 Jaguar XK-E Factory Lightweight Race Car

At the time of its introduction in 1961, the Jaguar E-Types, or XK-E, was the most newsworthy of sports cars. The car combined startling styling, a near-150-mph top speed, and a relatively low price for such a complete package. The only thing that could compete performance-wise was a Ferrari at a significantly higher price.

The E-Type was a completely different-looking vehicle than its predecessors. Its projectile-shaped styling was based on the famoud D-Type racers of the 1950's. What had been the most potent optional engine on the XK-150 became the standard engine on the XK-E. The construction was of the unibody type which reduced the weight by 400 pounds. The Jaguar E-Type remains one of the most beautiful automobiles of all times.

1963 Specifications:
Wheelbase: 96 in.
Weight: 2,625 lbs
Engine: 6-cylinder, 230-cid, 265-hp
Price: $5,895

Total production of E-Type coupes for 1961-1964: 7760

At the time of its introduction in 1961, the Jaguar E-Types, or XK-E, was the most newsworthy of sports cars. The car combined startling styling, a near-150-mph top speed, and a relatively low price for such a complete package. The only thing that could compete performance-wise was a Ferrari at a significantly higher price.

This 1962 Jaguar XKE-Type Series 1 Roadster is a matching numbers example that was given a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration. It is finished in the correct color of Cotswold Blue, has a black leather interior, original chrome trim, glass, and other major fittings. It has traveled just 50 miles post restoration which was completed in July of 2008.

There were just 5,249 examples of the Series 1 3.8-liter roadster delivered to the US from 1961 - 1964. In 2008, this XKE-Type Series 1 Roadster was offered for sale at the Hilton Head Sports & Classic Car Auction presented by Worldwide Auctioneers. It had an estimated value of $90,000 - $110,000. As the gavel fell for the third and final time, bidding had failed to satisfy the reserve and the lot was left unsold.
The Jaguar E type, also known as the XK-E, brought style and performance together to create a mass-produced supercar. The road-going sports car was conceived in 1956 as a replacement for the D-type. In March of 1961 the E-Type was officially introduced to the world at the Geneva, Switzerland Motor show.

It's design was created by an aerodynamic engineer named Malcolm Sayer. The front engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle featured a moncoque body and a tubular front chassis. The six-cylinder double-cam engine had three SU carburetors and produced 265 horsepower. The suspension was independent with disc brakes on all four wheels. It brought together the best or aerodynamics, coupled with the latest technology and propelled by a potent engine. The vehicle was not only fast, it offered excellent performance and handling. Some of the most common complaints it received were the cabin being too cramped and it suffered from poor ventilation.

The E-Type was a popular vehicle. It was fast, performed well, and was competitively priced. Due to the United States safety and emission regulations, some of the horsepower was lost. The headlamp covers were also removed prior to the close of the 1960's.

A 4.2-liter engine and synchromesh gearbox was introduced in 1964. In 1966, the 2+2 coupe was introduced and featured a longer wheelbase. The Series II cars were not as quick as its predecessors. The Series III, however, was a different story. Powered by a V-12 engine they were once again able to propel the E-Type over 145 miles per hour.

Production for the E-Type ceased in 1975, after 72,520 examples being produced. It was replaced by the XJ-S; a vehicle that was larger, heavier, and not as visually appealing.
